Streets Division - Snow Removal
The Streets Division - Snow Removal:
- The purpose of this procedure is to provide clear guidance to Town personnel, and clear expectations to the community, about the process and priorities governing the Town’s snow removal process.
- The Department of Public Works (DPW) shall salt, plow, and otherwise maintain public roadways in the following prioritized order:
- Clear major arterial and connector streets so emergency vehicles can pass (e.g. police, fire, ambulance, etc.)
- Minimize accumulations on other streets so at least one lane is passable (again, so emergency vehicles can reach every location)
- Once 1 and 2 have been achieved, perform maintenance work to improve conditions generally. This may involve snow hauling, expanding the drive aisles (e.g. eventually from curb to curb), additional salting, clearing fire hydrants to provide emergency access, clearing storm drains to move snowmelt and therefore avoid water ponding and freezing, clearing the municipal parking lot and metered parking so the community can shop for necessities, sustain the commercial core, go to court, pay bills, etc.
- Once these standing priorities have been addressed, further maintenance should be balanced with DPW’s other core functions.
